About Phase 4
Module Content
When your service dog is dropped off to you, we have to remember we are flipping its world totally around. Our job as handlers in these first few weeks is stability, relationship building and bonding. Putting our dogs on a schedule helps them to know what is going to come next in each day. Predictability is the goal for the dog so it can work on settling into the new routine and eases some anxiety about being in a new home.
Tethering is very specific when it comes to your service dog. We are not talking about back tying in this video. Tethering means that the dog is connected to you if it is not playing outside or in the kennel. We can avoid a lot of behavior problems simply by tethering the dog as it is getting used to the home. It is a passive way of teaching the dog what to do, so the dog isn't finding all of the things it should not be doing.
It is so important to know the things that your dog loves to do. Learning your dogs play style will help you connect with your new service dog much faster and begin building a bond with your dog. This will teach you some ways that dog like to play but also please rely on your trainer to teach you how to play with your dog. This is a very nuanced topic and is best addressed by the trainer that has had your dog for the last 18 months or so.
In this video we will talk about ways to help your dog decompress after the trip home. We will help you learn about sleep habits and goals, new and different ways you can decompress your dog and how that will help you both!
